As'Salam Wa'Alaykum
The โโBIGGESTโโ event of hosted by the UofR MSA annually is the Fastathon and it is almost HERE!!! This year’s topic will be the very controversial action of “jihad.” From the Arabic word for, “struggle,” or “effort,” see and understand how the media often contorts it to weaponize it against Muslims. This is an interfaith event and everyone, regardless of creed, are invited. We encourage that everyone fasts that day collectively to share a similar experience between the muslims and their non-muslim peers and to enjoy the breaking of a fast together as a community.
Our guest speaker will be Mustafa Abushagur,
who was a part of the founding committee of the UofR MSA when he was a visiting professor here in 1984. He was the chairman of the Optical Engineering Committee at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and later on became the founding director of the PhD program in Microsystems engineering at RIT. Dr. Abushagur further went on to be the founding president of RIT in Dubai, UAE and also served as the Interim Deputy Prime Minister of Libya (2011-2012).
Every year, the event used to be ticketed in order to collect donations for local charities in need. The best way to start an improvement is to start in your own home (or the home of your alma mater in this case). This year, we will be collecting donations AT the event, so that guests can choose to donate however much they would like and we encourage everyone to donate. There will be an auction for paintings created by our students to give you a little gift in exchange for the donations ๐๏ธ All collected donations will be given to Refugee Helping Refugees, a non-profit organization in Rochester that serves refugees of Western New York.
Because it is NOT a ticketed event, we CANNOT put enough emphasis on the importance of RSVPing. We will be checking for names at the door and no RSVP means NO ENTRY!!! Register today!๐
